All right, I've got to get it out. I don't usually put this kind of stuff out there, I'm trying not to be so critical. But here goes. I'm Mad AT STEPHANIE MEYER. Before you start to think that this is another, Edward v. Jacob discussion, or even a whine about Bella's insipid personality. THink again.
I am a mother of a 12 year old. I run my school's book fair. I watch one 6th grade girl after another come in and beg their mom to buy "TWILIGHT" for them and they do. I was a little twilight Nazi. At the register, if mom were there, I said "have you read it mom?" Invariably the answer is no. Well I have. And I admit to being selective about some of the stuff my kids read. But this is an "ABSOLUTELY NOT" Why, you ask? Because if you read Twilight, you're probably going to read New Moon. Both of those, by the way, I devoured, loved, thought about, enjoyed. Then came Eclipse with Pg 450+ others (look it up for yourself, my little girl reads this thing). NOT APPROPRIATE FOR MY 6th GRADER. SORRY!
So why am I mad at the author? She has the right to write what she wants. And I think it's kind of fun (though I'm not very enamored with her protagonist). I'm mad because she has put herself out there as a BYU GRADUATE, She's marketed this book up and down intermountain west. She knows that so many of her readers are young mormon girls whose moms say "oh, she's a BYU graduate, It's probably clean." Au contraire, mon frere. And where to go from here. Only down, as far as I can see.
All of that being said, I will be in line on August 2 for the release of Breaking Dawn. FOR MYSELF, though, NOT MY 6th GRADE DAUGHTER!!!!!

Amen! I will be in line to buy Breaking Dawn, though, too!
I agree they are not for 6 grader nor for 13 year olds or 15 year olds. If I had a daughter, I would not want Bella to be her role model.
I've never heard of this author or these books, but she should be more responsible. The real correlation I see with your blog and my own experiences with my students is that too many parents allow themselves to be worn down by their kids until they, ultimately, give them what they want. In this case a book of which the parents have no real knowledge...
Good blog!
Unfortunately I will be in line to buy the book too. And then I will mock the whole thing.
( I'm still quoting the line from New Moon "Come on Alice do it...BITE ME!") Now that is fantastic literature.
But there I will be in line with my copy forking out my money for my personal entertainment. But my children will most certainly not be!
Well, since I first heard of the Twilight series a few days ago, I've been hearing about it continuously from different directions. I started reading Twilight yesterday and--yes--I'm "dazzled." It's a gripping story and I've hardly put it down since I started. On amazon.com it is being advertised as for 9-12 year olds. WRONG. I haven't even reached any real adult content, but the feelings the characters have and their intensity are beyond those of the ages for this "target" audience. I'd say minimum (generously) 15 year olds. Although 15 year olds today are not what they used to be when we were kids. That said, I've read almost 400 pages and am hopelessly hooked!
Ooooooooooooooh controversy! My 15-year-old son has read all the books and loved them. He reads so many books that there is no way I can keep up with him, though I used to. He did mention that the last book had some “close to inappropriate” content. So of course now I want to read it . Can I ask why if it’s “clean” enough for adults, it isn’t for kids? From personal experience, I’ve found that the boys want to read what Troy and I read. By this age, I certainly can’t stop them from reading whatever they want if they are determined to do so. Just food for thought.
Talya,
Thanks for leaving your comment. I think the Series is OK for Older teens, just not my newly 12 year old daughter who is pretty innocent.
I'd sure love to be able to read your blog, but I can't seem to access it. I've been to your website. You are an amazing artist. I'd love to get back in touch.
Gail
Gail,
Adrienne loves this series. She is soooo excited about the movie release in December. I know she told me the date as she and friends are planning on going to the midnight showing in Anchorage. I just cannot remember stuff that far ahead.
I made Adrienne wait until she was 17.5 to start reading Stephanie Plum. I agree that some of this stuff they are printing is not for the young girls.
I am starting a blog I will let you know as soon as I figure it out.
P.S. Marie gave me your blog address.
